The 2020 League of Legends World Championship is now in progress, with each team having played three games in the group stage. The fate of several teams hangs in the balance as they compete for a spot in the knockout stage.
Teams with an 0-3 record, such as PSG Talon, TSM, and Unicorns of Love, face an uphill battle to make it to the next round. They must win all their remaining games and rely on other teams in their group to falter.
On the other hand, teams like Top Esports and Damwon Gaming have gone undefeated and only need one or two more wins to secure their place in the quarterfinals.
Group A
G2 Esports (2-1)
G2 are currently tied at the top of Group A with a 2-1 record. To secure their spot in the next stage, they need to win two of their next three games. However, they can still qualify with just one win if certain tiebreaker scenarios play out.
Suning (2-1)
Suning has the same path as G2 to the knockout stage. Winning two of their next three games guarantees their advancement. If they win only one game and G2 goes 5-1, Suning needs the team they beat to defeat the other 1-2 team.
Machi Esports (1-2)
If Machi can win all their remaining games, they will secure a spot in the knockout stage. If they win only two games, they need G2 or Suning to lose all their remaining games to advance without any tiebreaker scenarios.
Team Liquid (1-2)
If Team Liquid wins all three of their remaining games, they will advance. If they win only two games, they need G2 or Suning to falter and lose their remaining games to avoid tiebreakers.
Group B
Damwon Gaming (3-0)
With a perfect record of 3-0, Damwon only needs to beat Rogue to secure a place in the next round. Two wins would also guarantee their advancement, while even one win would require Rogue to win three straight games for a tiebreaker scenario.
JD Gaming (2-1)
JD Gaming controls their own destiny. Winning all their remaining games guarantees their spot in the knockout stage. If they win one or two games, they need Rogue to not surpass them in the standings.
Rogue (1-2)
Rogue can make it to the knockout stage without requiring tiebreakers. If they win all three of their remaining games and JD Gaming loses two or Damwon loses all three, they will advance. They can also advance with two wins if JD Gaming loses all their remaining games.
PSG Talon (0-3)
PSG Talon faces slim odds of qualifying. They need to win all three of their remaining matches, have JD Gaming lose all their remaining games, and have Damwon defeat Rogue again to have a chance.
Group C
Fnatic (2-1)
Fnatic is tied with two other teams for the top spot in Group C. Winning all their remaining games guarantees their advancement. If they lose one game, they could be involved in a tiebreaker scenario. To avoid that, Fnatic needs TSM to defeat either Gen.G or LGD Gaming.
Gen.G (2-1)
Gen.G has a similar situation to Fnatic. Winning all their remaining games secures their spot. If they win two of their next three games, they need help from TSM to qualify.
LGD Gaming (2-1)
LGD Gaming can qualify by winning all their remaining games. With two wins, they need TSM to defeat either Gen.G or Fnatic. With one win, they need either Gen.G or Fnatic to end up at 2-4 and the other team to go 5-1.
TSM (0-3)
TSM must rely on tiebreakers to make it to the knockout stage. Even if they win all their remaining games, they can only achieve a 3-3 record and would need other teams to lose their matches to have a chance.
Group D
Top Esports (3-0)
Top Esports are in a similar situation to Damwon. They only need to defeat FlyQuest to qualify for the next round. Two or three wins would solidify their position as the top team in the group.
DRX (2-1)
DRX needs to maintain their lead against FlyQuest to secure a spot in the knockout stage. Winning all their remaining games guarantees their advancement. With two wins, they need FlyQuest to not win all their remaining matches.
FlyQuest (1-2)
FlyQuest has multiple paths to qualify. Winning their next three games and having DRX lose two games is the easiest way. They can also qualify by winning all their remaining games and having Top Esports lose all theirs. Alternatively, winning two of their games and having DRX lose their remaining matches would also secure their spot.
Unicorns of Love (0-3)
Unicorns of Love face long odds of making it to the knockout stage. They need to win all their remaining games, have DRX lose all their remaining games, and have Top Esports defeat FlyQuest for a second time.
The competition will continue on October 8th.
