Understanding the Mechanics of Experience (XP) in League of Legends: A Comprehensive Guide

Gaining experience (or XP) is crucial in League of Legends because it helps your champion level up and unlock new abilities. Leveling up your abilities makes a big difference in the game, even though it might not seem appealing to new players.

The strength and effectiveness of your abilities increase when you level them up. Additionally, you don’t have access to all of your spells at level 1. The most efficient way to gain XP is by farming minions and getting kills.

How Much XP is Needed to Level Up

Let’s now take a look at how much experience is required for a champion to level up. In League of Legends, the maximum level is 18.

It’s important to note that if you reach level 18, you will still gain XP, but it won’t have any effect on your champion.

Although it may seem like it takes a long time to reach level 18 by farming 60 minion waves, there are other ways to earn XP as well. Killing enemy champions, farming neutral jungle monsters, getting objectives, and most importantly, killing minions are all effective ways to gain XP.

It’s also worth noting that some game items require a certain level before you can purchase or use them. This prevents players from abusing items and gaining an unfair advantage. Items like Elixers and Farsight Trinkets fall into this category.

If you share a lane with other champions, you will gain less XP. The more champions there are, the more XP is split among all allies. This is why the bot lane is usually a level or two behind the mid lane or top lane.

How Does XP Work in the Jungle?

Now let’s discuss how XP works in the jungle. In League of Legends, there are five primary roles. While four of these roles go to lanes and farm minions or get kills for XP, junglers need to fight neutral monsters in the jungle.

Neutral monsters are scattered across the map on both sides and provide varying amounts of XP. As a jungler, XP is crucial because it increases the damage of your Smite ability and helps you secure objectives.

Jungle camps provide different amounts of XP, and each time you kill a camp, it levels up and becomes stronger when it respawns. This ensures that you receive the appropriate amount of XP as the game progresses. The camp gains more HP, higher stats, and higher damage as well.

For detailed information about individual jungle camps and the amount of XP they provide, refer to the table below.

Each jungle camp has its unique characteristics, and some provide special buffs as well. For example, the Red and Blue buffs grant you temporary powers when you defeat them. These buffs make you stronger and enable you to assist your team more effectively.

The Rift Scuttler, found in the river, is often contested by both junglers, so be prepared to fight for it.

Additionally, you can kill dragons, Baron Nashor, and the Rift Herald to gain more XP for your team. Each of these objectives provides different amounts of XP and offers significant benefits to your team.

For example, obtaining the dragon soul gives your team a massive advantage and increases your stats.

How Much XP Does a Kill Give

Finally, let’s explore how much XP you can gain from killing an enemy or getting an assist. The amount of XP you receive depends on the enemy’s level. If you kill an enemy who is lower level than you, your champion will receive less XP. On the other hand, if you kill an enemy who is higher level than you, your character will gain more XP than usual.

For the exact amount of XP you can gain from solo-killing an enemy based on their level, refer to the table below.

As you can see, the higher the enemy’s level, the more XP you receive. As your champion needs more XP to level up at higher levels, you earn more experience from kills, assists, and farming minions.

Keep in mind that there is a limited range in which you can receive XP. If you’re out of range when minions or champions die, you won’t gain any XP from them. Therefore, it’s crucial to stay in range and farm minions.

During the early game, farming is the best way to gain XP. Even if you have numerous kills, failing to farm or stay in range of minion XP can cause you to fall behind the enemy in terms of levels, especially in the top lane.

Make sure to farm minions regardless of the number of kills you have and always stay within XP range. When it comes to jungle monsters, only the person who kills the camp receives the XP. So, don’t waste time standing next to your teammate when they are farming jungle camps. Instead, communicate with them and ask if you can take a camp to earn gold and XP.
