CLG vs. TSM: The Classic Rivalry in the NA LCS

TSM and CLG Look to Redeem Themselves in NA LCS Summer Split

Last split, TSM and CLG both fell out of the spotlight in the NA LCS. However, instead of making roster changes, both teams have decided to stick with their current players. Now, they must prove that this was the right decision and show that they have learned from their past mistakes.

TSM has historically been the stronger team, winning both matches against CLG last split. But now, both teams must demonstrate that they have the skills and strategies to return to their championship form.

TSM’s Journey

TSM’s goal for the Spring Split was to reinvent themselves after their lack of international success. Despite winning three consecutive domestic titles, TSM’s core group faltered at the World Championships in 2017. In an effort to bring in experience, TSM brought in European duo lane, Zven and mithy, who had previously played on the Semifinals stage at Worlds with Origen. They also added jungler MikeYeung to complement their longstanding mid laner, Bjergsen.

However, TSM disappointed in the playoffs, losing to Clutch Gaming in a four-game series and failing to make it to the finals for the first time in the organization’s history.

This split, TSM needs to establish a clear direction early on. In the spring, they barely made it into the playoffs and were quickly eliminated due to their lack of coordination. Even Bjergsen and top laner Hauntzer had shaky performances. TSM’s stars must find their footing if they want to reclaim the North American throne.

Last split, CLG missed the playoffs entirely, which was a first for the team. The roster struggled with a lack of leadership, as both bot laners were used to having their former partners take on the shotcalling role.

Former LCS MVP, Reignover, also had a tough time adapting to the tank meta and often found himself out of position. Although he showed improvement towards the end of the split, he faltered again in a match against TSM. Reignover needs to regain his confidence from his MVP season if CLG wants to compete for a championship.

Fortunately, Darshan Upadhyaya has been a consistent performer in the top lane, holding his own against some of the best top laners in the league. CLG will rely on him and mid laner Huhi to maintain their steady play in the upcoming split.

The grudge match between TSM and CLG kicks off this Saturday at 3pm PT.
