Helldivers 2 Steam ratings plummet due to PSN account linking resulting in mass loss of access

Helldivers 2 Receives Backlash Over Mandatory PSN Account Linking

In recent days, the popular game Helldivers 2 has faced a significant decrease in its Steam ratings, dropping to an ‘overwhelmingly negative’ status. Players have expressed strong dissatisfaction with the game’s new requirement that forces them to link their PSN account to their Steam account or risk losing access in the future.

Players Share Frustration Over PSN Accounts Limitations

Many players have taken to online platforms like Reddit to vent their frustrations over the mandatory account linking. Some users pointed out the limitations of the PSN accounts, noting that they are only available in specific countries, causing a significant inconvenience for gamers worldwide. The misleading advertising of the linking feature has also fueled dissatisfaction among players.

Developers Give Ultimatum for Account Linking

The developers of Helldivers 2 recently issued a notice informing players about the upcoming deadline to link their accounts. This announcement has triggered a wave of outrage among players who fear losing their access to the game if they fail to comply with the new requirement.

As a consequence of this decision, Helldivers 2 will no longer be available in 177 countries where PSN accounts are not accessible, including regions like Japan and the Maldives.

Surge in Negative Reviews Post-Announcement

Following the announcement, Helldivers 2 has amassed over 486,090 reviews on Steam, with a significant influx of 153,500 negative reviews since May 3. Players are expressing their disappointment through their feedback on the Helldivers2 reviews section.

Developers Defend Account Linking Decision

The developers of Helldivers 2 have stated that the account linking requirement was initially optional due to technical issues at launch but has now become mandatory. They argue that linking accounts ensures better reporting, moderation, and player interaction within the game.

The recent data breach involving Sony has further fueled players’ concerns about data security, adding to their hesitance in linking their accounts.

Search for a Middle Ground

Community managers of Helldivers 2 are currently engaged in discussions with players on platforms like Discord to address their concerns regarding account linking. They assure players that they are exploring alternative solutions and strive to find a balance between compliance and player satisfaction.

In response to the backlash, the CEO of Arrowhead Game Studios took to social media to acknowledge the community’s feedback and express ongoing discussions with PlayStation to find a resolution for players in non-PSN countries.
