Operation Modifiers in Helldivers 2: The Good and the Bad
Helldivers 2 offers a wide range of operation modifiers that add an extra layer of excitement to the game. However, not all modifiers are created equal. While some can enhance the gameplay experience, others can be rather frustrating.
The Infamous AA Defenses Modifier
One operation modifier that has garnered a lot of criticism from Helldivers 2 players is AA Defenses. In fact, it is considered the worst modifier in the game. Players often choose to abandon missions that have this modifier due to its negative impact on gameplay. It begs the question, why would developers introduce an effect that hinders players’ engagement with a core mechanic? The AA Defenses modifier reduces the total number of Stratagem slots by one, which can be quite frustrating, especially during high-difficulty missions.
The limitation of only having three Stratagem slots per player significantly reduces the firepower at players’ disposal to deal with enemies. This limitation has frustrated many players, who argue that if developers want to restrict Stratagem choices, it would be better to target a group of Strategems instead. Furthermore, they suggest tying the restriction to the planet’s weather conditions, such as not being able to use certain Stratagems during lightning storms or due to targeting interference.
Another proposed solution is to link the AA Defenses modifier to the AA objective that can be encountered during the mission. Destroying the objective could grant access to a fourth Stratagem slot, either through pre-selection or randomization.
A Frustrating and Unengaging Challenge
Unlike modifiers like Electronic Countermeasures, the AA Defenses modifier fails to make the game more enjoyable or provide an engaging challenge. Instead, it becomes an “annoying frustration at best.” In the current meta of Helldivers 2, where primary weapons are being nerfed, the use of Stratagems becomes even more vital. Unfortunately, the AA Defenses modifier only exacerbates the situation and makes things worse for players.
