Fortnite’s New Year Celebration Impedes My Battle Royale Triumph

When it comes to a 20-minute Fortnite match, we’ve all been there. It comes down to just two players, and the one who eliminates the other first will take the win.

In a recent match, I found myself in that exact situation. I was determined to end my 2018 on a high note with a squad victory. I had already eliminated nearly nine opponents in the High Explosives LTM mode and had the last enemy in my sights.

Focused on my target, I used a set of balloons to launch myself into the air and rain rockets down on them from a distance. Everything seemed to be going well, and victory was within reach—until a massive Disco Ball suddenly appeared in the sky.

If you’ve been playing Fortnite throughout the day, you’re probably familiar with this towering Disco Ball. It appears every hour to celebrate the new year in different time zones.

Unfortunately, I had no idea that this would happen when I launched myself into the sky. The Disco Ball caused me to instantly start dancing, as if I had been hit by a Boogie Bomb. And to make matters worse, it also prevented me from using my balloons.

Fireworks filled the air, emotes covered the battlefield, and I was sent crashing down to the ground at incredible speed. It was a quick and easy victory for the opposing player, resulting in a frustrating end to my 2018 in Fortnite.

Needless to say, it wasn’t the ending I had hoped for in Fortnite for 2018.
