Yay’s Worst Match Since Joining OpTic: Guild Defeats Them at VCT Masters Copenhagen

OpTic’s Disappointing Loss at VCT Masters Copenhagen

OpTic’s surprising loss to Guild at VCT Masters Copenhagen left fans shocked. However, the most stunning aspect of the reigning Masters champions’ defeat was the unusually poor performance by superstar Jaccob “yay” Whiteaker.

Ever since joining the roster during the team’s Envy days, just prior to Stage Three of the 2021 VCT season, yay has been a key player in both the Jett and Chamber roles. Prior to the match against Guild, yay had only experienced a negative kill/death (K/D) ratio in two matches. In both cases, against XSET and Evil Geniuses during Stage Two this year, OpTic came out on the losing side.

But in those losses, yay’s K/D ratio was only -1 against XSET and -2 versus EG. Against Guild, his K/D ratio was a staggering -16. Throughout both maps, yay struggled at the bottom of the scoreboard and failed to score for the first four rounds of Icebox and the first seven rounds of Split. His overall average combat score (ACS) of 149 in this series is also his lowest since joining the roster. Additionally, his typical success rate for securing the first kill averaged over 60 percent, but he only won 50 percent of his opening duels against Guild.

While yay’s performance was disappointing, it would be unfair to solely blame him. Marved was the only player on the team with a positive K/D rating, and only he and crashies achieved a kill-assist-survive-trade percentage over 70. Victor also had a tough day on the server with a -16 K/D rating and a dismal win rate of 29 percent in opening duels, but he managed to contribute 24 assists across both maps.

However, it’s not all doom and gloom for OpTic. Despite the atypical loss to Guild, it’s worth noting that the team had a similar start in Masters Reykjavík, where they lost their opening match 2-0 in the group stage. Additionally, despite their struggles against Guild, they were able to make comebacks on both Icebox and Split, losing by just two rounds on each map.

OpTic will have a day off to recover and refocus before facing LOUD in a grand finals rematch, a series that is happening much earlier than anticipated for both teams. The do-or-die clash between OpTic and LOUD will take place on Tuesday, July 12, at 2pm CT.
