What we’ve learned about VALORANT’s lore: A quick recap after the 2022 season

Most first person shooter games have lore, but their backstory doesn’t impact gameplay. That’s not the case with Riot’s FPS, VALORANT. The game’s lore is expansive and complex, with each new ranked season adding more to the story.

The lore of VALORANT centers around Radianite, a crystal-like rock that was discovered as a clean energy source after an event called First Light. First Light altered Earth and some humans were affected by Radianite, becoming known as Radiants. Many of the agents in VALORANT are Radiants and their abilities come from Radianite exposure.

One company, Kingdom, became successful in controlling Radianite and the VALORANT Protocol was formed by former Kingdom employees. They protect the planet from the harmful effects of Radianite. Another group, the VALORANT Legion, exists on Omega Earth and steals Radianite from Alpha Earth.

The game’s cinematics reveal more about the lore, such as the Venice incident and the discovery of two versions of Earth, Alpha and Omega. Physical clues in the game, like Brimstone’s office and agent dossiers, also add to the backstory.

New agents, like Neon and Harbor, have their own stories and join the ranks of the VALORANT Protocol. Agent 8 remains a mystery, potentially being one of the original members.
