VALORANT’s Yoru: Insights into the Developer’s Inspiration

Yoru in VALORANT: Inspired by Anime and Japanese Rebel Street Fashion

A developer of VALORANT recently revealed that the character, Yoru, was inspired by the “lone rebel hero” archetype found in anime, as well as Japan’s rebellious street fashion.

Cynprel, an enthusiast of VALORANT’s lore, shared a screenshot of a conversation with Riot Games’ narrative writer, ParmCheesy, where he explained how the team created Yoru’s backstory and style. The Riot team, being fans of anime and Japanese media, was thrilled to design an agent inspired by these interests.

Yoru, the Japanese duelist in VALORANT, has abilities that allow him to outmaneuver enemies easily. ParmCheesy confirmed that Yoru takes inspiration from anime characters like Jotaro Kujo from JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, Kazuma Kiryu from the Yakuza series, Mondo from Killer is Dead, and Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop. These characters embody the “cool lone rebel hero” archetype commonly seen in anime.

Yoru’s style is influenced by Japanese rebel street fashion, resulting in an agent that combines the exciting anime-style archetype with unique streetwear. While Yoru may not be the easiest agent to master, he is undoubtedly one of the coolest characters in VALORANT. In upcoming patches, Yoru is expected to receive significant updates, which may make him even more enticing for players to choose.

The Riot characters team likely shares interests in various forms of media and art, which could potentially influence the creation of future VALORANT agents.
