VALORANT’s In-Game Storytelling Will Resemble Fortnite, Says Riot

VALORANT’s Storytelling Approach Revealed by Riot Games

Riot Games, the developer of the upcoming competitive first-person shooter VALORANT, is taking a unique approach to storytelling. Creative director David Nottingham explained in an interview with Polygon that the game’s story will primarily unfold within the game itself.

This means that players can expect an evolving world that will change as the game progresses. While there will be some world-building outside of the game to provide context for the characters and their powers, the focus will be on subtly integrating clues and breadcrumbs into the gameplay.

Nottingham drew inspiration from Epic Games’ approach to storytelling in Fortnite, where changes to the game’s world and narrative are seamlessly implemented without disrupting the core gameplay. It suggests that VALORANT’s storytelling may follow a similar path.

Although Fortnite doesn’t have a traditional storyline, it incorporates overarching plotlines and characters that impact the game by altering the map, locations, and weapons. VALORANT may adopt a similar strategy to convey its narrative.

Another multiplayer game that incorporates storytelling is Overwatch, which utilizes cinematic shorts, comics, and other mediums. Nottingham revealed that VALORANT will also include story material presented outside of the game, which will be reflected within the gameplay itself.

As of now, little is known about VALORANT, but more information will be revealed in the upcoming weeks and months. Players can look forward to discovering how the game’s story will unfold.
