VALORANT Championships team penalized for substance use violation during competition

NAVI Faces Controversy and Penalty at VALORANT Champions 2023

Following their recent loss to DRX at VALORANT Champions 2023, NAVI is determined to secure a win and secure their spot in the playoffs. However, a small controversy emerged on social media when head coach Erik “d00mbr0s” Sandgren revealed that the team had been penalized during the first map of the series for using a banned substance on stage.

Penalty for Use of Banned Substance

In a now-deleted tweet, coach Erik “d00mbr0s” Sandgren stated that NAVI had one of their timeouts revoked due to a player being caught using Snus on stage. During the live broadcast, Kyrylo “ANGE1” Karasov, the team’s in-game leader and veteran, was seen using Snus, resulting in immediate punishment from Riot Games officials.

The 2023 VCT Ruleset and Banned Substances

In the 2023 VCT ruleset, only drinks in league-approved resealable containers and chewing gum are allowed on stage. Food, tobacco, and other nicotine-based items are prohibited in the match area. Snus, a form of smokeless tobacco, is commonly used by esports players. It is placed under the upper lip for consumption and provides an alternative to traditional chewing tobacco, which requires spitting.

Snus and Esports Players

This smokeless tobacco product has gained popularity among esports players, including those in the European League of Legends scene. These players reportedly use Snus to cope with the pressures of their careers and the scrutiny they face from the public. However, after this incident, players must refrain from using Snus on stage during VALORANT events to avoid penalties.

Despite the controversy, NAVI is determined to refocus for their final match in the Champions group stage on Saturday, Aug. 12.
