In a recent Twitch stream, Russian VALORANT star Ilya “Something” Petrov shared that he was overlooked by Rex Regum Qeon, another team in the VCT Pacific League, before signing with Paper Rex in 2023.

Despite being a standout player in Japanese Challengers 2022, Something was disregarded by most teams in the VCT Pacific League. During the livestream, he expressed that teams may have believed he could only perform well against Japanese players, which led to him being overlooked for signing.

Before joining Paper Rex, Something reached out to Rex Regum Qeon but surprisingly got turned down without any trials. Following this, he also trialed for BOOM Esports, an Indonesian team, but was not signed and remained on Sengoku Gaming until joining Paper Rex this year.

As we approach the end of 2023, it is evident that Rex Regum Qeon missed out on the chance to have a star player in their VALORANT squad. The team faced an early exit in VCT LOCK//IN São Paulo, finished seventh in the VCT Pacific League, and failed to secure a spot in the VALORANT Champions 2023 through the LCQ.

Something Shines in the VCT Pacific League and VALORANT Champions

Meanwhile, Something was the highest-rated player in the VCT Pacific League with a 1.22 rating, according to VLR.gg. He played a crucial role in Paper Rex’s success and currently holds the second-highest rating for the team at VALORANT Champions with a 1.13 rating, based on VLR.gg.

Paper Rex and Something Poised for VALORANT Champions 2023 Grand Finals

If Paper Rex and Something can defeat Evil Geniuses in the upper bracket finals, they will advance to the VALORANT Champions 2023 grand finals on Thursday, Aug. 24. Meanwhile, Rex Regum Qeon likely regrets not signing him when he was still playing for Sengoku.
