Riot’s New Initiative, the VALORANT Champions Tour Game Changers, Aims to Promote Opportunities and Visibility for Women and Marginalized Genders

Riot Games Introduces VCT Game Changers to Promote Inclusivity in VALORANT Esports

Riot Games has announced the expansion of the VALORANT Champions Tour with the introduction of a new program called VCT Game Changers. This initiative aims to provide opportunities and visibility for women and other marginalized genders within the VALORANT esports community.

The Game Changers program is a result of Riot’s commitment to creating a more diverse and representative esports scene, following the success of the “For the Women Summer Showdown” Ignition Series tournament held in September 2020.

Whalen Rozell, senior director of esports at Riot, explained that Game Changers will offer tournaments and development programs for women who want to elevate their gameplay beyond competitive ladder play. The goal is to foster an inclusive environment and provide safe spaces for women to compete without fear of identity or gender-based harassment.

The VCT Game Changers Series and Academy

The VCT Game Changers program consists of two main components: the VCT Game Changers series and the VCT Game Changers Academy.

The VCT Game Changers series will feature high-level competitions held in various regions throughout 2021. The first event will take place in North America in March, with Riot aiming for a similar scale to the Ignition Series.

On the other hand, the VCT Game Changers Academy will focus on providing more opportunities for players at the semi-pro and grassroots level. This circuit of tournaments will include monthly events organized in partnership with Galorants, one of the largest VALORANT communities.

Aiming for Inclusivity and Addressing Challenges

Riot acknowledges the lack of opportunities and exposure for women and other marginalized genders in VALORANT, as well as the harassment they often face. The Game Changers program is part of Riot’s ongoing efforts to address these issues.

Anna Donlon, VALORANT executive producer, recognizes the challenges that women face in competitive gaming and highlights the improvements Riot is making to enhance the gaming experience. These improvements include chat enhancements, voice communication features, and measures to mitigate griefing. The Game Changers program provides another avenue for Riot to support the esports community.

Further details about the VCT Game Changers program will be announced as Riot and its partners prepare for the first events in the upcoming months.
