Riot Responds to VALORANT Fans’ Concerns, Enhances Challenger Schedule and Introduces Cross-Tier Loans

Riot Games Announces Major Changes Coming to VALORANT Challengers Ecosystem

In exciting news for fans of competitive VALORANT, Riot Games has announced significant changes that will be implemented in the Challengers ecosystem next year. These changes aim to provide more opportunities for players and enhance the tier-two scene within the game.

Transition to Year-Round Challengers League

The most noteworthy change is the upcoming transition to a “year-round” Challengers league. This new format will include league play during the tier-one offseason, specifically after the Champions event, starting in 2024. According to Riot, this new calendar will ensure that players have continued opportunities to compete and improve their skills. Additionally, Riot will introduce a new Challengers affiliate program and loan system for tier-one teams in the international VCT leagues.

Addressing the Short Calendar Complaints

The Challengers leagues in 2023 generated a lot of competition and viewership in select markets. However, many tier-two VALORANT fans and participants expressed their dissatisfaction with the extremely short calendar of events. Several teams found their season ending before June had even concluded, leading to organizations dropping rosters with no matches to play for the next six months.

In June, Leo Faria, the global head of VALORANT esports, made a promise that Challengers competition would be ongoing throughout the year, starting from the 2024 season.

Rescheduling the Ascension Tournament

While specific details of the expanded Challengers calendar for 2024 are yet to be finalized, one change that has been confirmed is the rescheduling of the Ascension tournament. It will now take place in September, after the conclusion of Champions. This change is expected to give the tournament even more visibility and recognition, as stated by Riot officials.

Facilitating Collaboration Between Partnered Teams and Challenger League Teams

Furthermore, Riot has given permission for partnered teams in the international VCT leagues to establish an affiliate relationship with Challenger League teams. This allows them to utilize a new player loan system, enabling the exchange of players between the two leagues. In essence, tier-one VCT teams will have the opportunity to call up players from their affiliate Challengers league.
