Riot aims to differentiate Game Changers from VALORANT’s WNBA, according to esports head

The VALORANT Game Changers Championship: A Closer Look at the Venue and Format

In 2023, the announcement of the venue and format for the upcoming VALORANT Game Changers Championship has been met with criticism from pro players and fans. Many expressed disappointment with the unchanged format and venue size compared to the previous year.

Riot’s Explanation for the Decision

The head of VALORANT esports, Leo Faria, has addressed the concerns and provided insight into the reasons behind the decision. Faria cited costs as a factor but emphasized Riot’s goal of creating a single, diverse VALORANT Champions Tour (VCT) ecosystem instead of separate ones.

“Our vision for the VCT is to be a sport that reflects the diverse community of VALORANT,” Faria wrote on the game’s competitive subreddit. “Where men and women play together. Where we can crown the one (not two) best VALORANT team in the world every season.”

Faria explained that Game Changers aims to provide opportunities for women, both in front and behind the cameras, and expanding the scope of the tournament contradicts their vision of a unified sport.

Game Changers’ Role in the VCT Ecosystem

While Game Changers is designed to create a space for women and marginalized genders to compete, it is still part of the overall VCT ecosystem. Players have encouraged each other to participate in open tournaments outside of Game Changers, highlighting the inclusive nature of the VALORANT esports community.

The Practicality of the Venue Size

Faria also addressed the financial implications of hosting the event at a larger venue. He mentioned the significant investment and resources required for the Game Changers Championship, and scaling up to a Masters-size tournament would exponentially increase the workload and infrastructure needs.

By utilizing an existing Riot venue, such as the CBLOL Arena in São Paulo, Faria believes the team can focus on enhancing features, creating compelling content, and ensuring a visually stunning broadcast.
