Professional gamer retires right after the launch of CS2, returning to Counter-Strike

Jacob “pyth” Mourujärvi Retires from VALORANT, Potential Return to Counter-Strike

Jacob “pyth” Mourujärvi, a former professional player in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO) for Ninjas in Pyjamas and in VALORANT for G2, announced his retirement from Riot Games’ FPS game yesterday. This coincided with Valve’s release of Counter-Strike 2 for limited testing, with a worldwide launch planned for this summer.

Pyth had been out of the competitive VALORANT scene since August 2022 when he left the Asian team Bleed Esports. He was one of the first CS:GO players to transition to VALORANT in 2020 and notably played for G2 from June 2020 to June 2021. During this time, he helped G2 dominate the early days of VALORANT in Europe, winning tournaments like Red Bull Home Ground in January 2021 and BLAST Twitch Invitational in September 2020.

Pyth has not disclosed his plans for the future, only stating that he is retiring from Riot Games’ FPS.

A Potential Return to Counter-Strike?

Before announcing his retirement from VALORANT and sharing news of the CS2 launch, pyth had not tweeted since December 2022 when he mentioned his goal of getting his driver’s license and focusing on grinding in January 2023.

This retirement from VALORANT has left his fans pondering whether pyth may make a comeback to the professional Counter-Strike scene. In addition to playing for Ninjas in Pyjamas, he has also competed for CS:GO teams like SK Gaming, n!faculty, and Luminosity Gaming.

During his time with Ninjas in Pyjamas, pyth helped the team win two tier-one tournaments in 2016, DreamHack Masters Malmö and IEM Oakland, before leaving in 2017. He continued playing for lesser-known CS:GO teams until his transition to VALORANT in 2020.

Professional VALORANT player Vladyslav “arch” Svistov wished pyth luck in CS2, further fueling speculation about a potential return to Counter-Strike for the former Ninjas in Pyjamas rifler.

has reached out to pyth for comment but has not received a response at this time.
