Producer of VALORANT expresses willingness to add a ‘secure version’ of a blocking feature

VALORANT Dev Hints at Possibility of Block List Feature

The VALORANT community may soon have a solution to deal with toxic players, as a block list feature could be on the horizon. VALORANT producer Sara Dadafshar mentioned in a recent Reddit post that a “safe version” of the block list feature might be added to the game in the future. However, implementing this feature is not as straightforward as it seems.

In her Reddit post, Dadafshar acknowledged that the block list is not completely out of consideration. However, one crucial factor needs to be addressed before implementing it. According to Dadafshar, the block list could potentially be misused by players, resulting in good players being unfairly ignored and negatively impacting matchmaking queues. The purpose of the feature is to enable players to block and ignore disruptive individuals who use profanity and engage in inappropriate behavior in voice and chat.

Toxicity is a prevalent issue in the gaming community, and it often leads to frustration. Although voice chat allows for better communication, it also opens doors for homophobic, sexist, and racist language. The same issues can be found in VALORANT and other FPS games. While the game already has a “mute” button to silence teammates, it is sometimes insufficient. Toxic players can find alternative ways to disrupt the game and create a negative experience for others.

The block feature is not entirely new to Riot Games, as it is already implemented in their game League of Legends. If a player blocks someone in League, the blocked summoner’s messages will be automatically muted if they end up in the same game. Riot is also currently testing the impact of disabling the “/all chat” feature in League, which allows interaction between enemy teams. The developers are evaluating its influence based on community feedback, reports rates, and surveys to determine whether the negative interactions outweigh the positives.

As the VALORANT team continues to explore the idea of a block list, players can expect updates on this topic in the future.
