Fans Concerned About Format for VALORANT Champions Tournament
Riot Games recently revealed the tournament format for this year’s VALORANT Champions, and fans are already expressing concerns. In a post on the League of Legends subreddit, fans have raised issues regarding the format, which they find unsatisfactory, especially considering the format of the League World Championship.
Last year, people complained about the format of League’s biggest tournament, urging the addition of a double-elimination system. They believed that this would intensify the competition and create compelling storylines through the lower bracket. Additionally, fans are frustrated that VALORANT, Riot’s popular first-person shooter, is implementing a double-elimination format for its upcoming international event, Champions 2022.

Every major region follows the double-elimination format in their playoffs, leading to memorable moments like G2 Esports’ undefeated run through the lower bracket at the 2022 Mid-Season Invitational. Fans have also critiqued the one-week break in the middle of the tournament and the lack of competitive cross-regional play, as only seven best-of-five matches are played at the event.
One user expressed their dissatisfaction, stating, “Honestly, at this point, it’s not very exciting to wait for a year for seven best-of-fives, the majority of which are usually not even competitive. How many good series do we usually get at Worlds? One? Two?”
Towards the end of Worlds 2021, Riot’s global esports head, John Needham, acknowledged the possibility of a format change, saying, “it’s something we’ll definitely consider moving forward.” This statement gave hope to fans hoping for more matchups between the best teams worldwide. However, the World Championship format remains the same for 2022, much to the disappointment of League fans.
