Japanese VALORANT prodigy suspended by organization for smurfing; will consequently not attend home event

Tokyo-based Esports Team Loses Player due to Smurfing and Boosting

The upcoming Red Bull Home Ground #4 tournament in Tokyo, Japan is already attracting a lot of attention among VALORANT fans. However, one of the Japanese teams entered in the tournament has faced a setback as they have lost one of their players just weeks before the event. Yuto “Xdll” Mizomori from FENNEL has been suspended for two months due to smurfing and boosting. Smurfing refers to playing at lower ranks on new or other players’ accounts to raise their rank. This suspension means that Xdll will miss the chance to play against some of the best teams in front of a local crowd. FENNEL is currently looking for a substitute player to fill Xdll’s spot in the roster.

The Consequences of Smurfing and Boosting

Smurfing and boosting are actions that are treated differently by different organizations and regions. In this case, FENNEL has handed out a relatively severe punishment of a two-month suspension. However, since this is the offseason, it doesn’t have a significant impact on the team’s participation in off-season events such as the Red Bull Home Ground tournament.

The Stigma of Smurfing among Professional Players

Smurfing is a controversial issue, especially when it comes to professional players. While regular ranked VALORANT players are familiar with encountering smurfs who are clearly better than their rank, smurfing as a pro player is heavily frowned upon, particularly if it involves payment. It can be seen as a form of cheating, as it provides an unfair advantage.

Despite this, it’s likely that many VALORANT players have smurfed in the past, although it may not be publicly known. Pacific organizations and teams in various esports take a dim view of smurfing, which explains the length of Xdll’s suspension.

Looking Ahead for FENNEL

FENNEL will need to find a new player to replace Xdll in their roster. The Red Bull Home Ground #4 tournament offers an opportunity for teams to showcase their talent before the VCT 2024 season, with an unannounced prize pool. FENNEL secured their spot in the tournament through a Japanese qualifier. However, the team will now have to adjust to the unexpected change and prepare to face strong opponents such as ZETA DIVISION, 100 Thieves, and DRX.
