Concerns grow among VALORANT fans about possible partnerships between pro teams and betting companies

VALORANT Community Expresses Disappointment Towards Riot Games

Some members of the VALORANT community are disappointed with Riot Games following reports that the developer will allow partnered organizations to be sponsored by betting companies. According to Turkish news outlet Esporkolik, this change in stance has sparked controversy amongst fans.

Gambling sponsors are currently prohibited in VALORANT, as stated in the VCT global competitive policy rulebook published in 2021. This rule also extends to fantasy esports operators, alcoholic products, cryptocurrency platforms, and other unregulated financial instruments. While allowing betting companies as sponsors could provide teams with additional funding, many fans believe it is an inappropriate approach.

One fan expressed their discontent on the VALORANT Competitive subreddit, stating, “As someone who gambles, even on VALORANT sometimes, I don’t like this. It always feels off to have esports teams with gambling advertisements on their gear.” Concerns have also been raised about the potential impact of gambling sponsorships on competitive integrity, especially considering the young player base of VALORANT.

Uncertainty Surrounding Riot Games’ Stance

It remains to be seen whether Riot Games’ decision to allow gambling sponsors applies solely to VALORANT or extends to all of its esports titles. Currently, betting sponsorships are strictly prohibited in the League of Legends scene.

Possible Implications for Franchised Leagues

The report comes just weeks before the start of the franchised leagues in the Americas, EMEA, and Pacific regions. If betting companies are allowed to sponsor VALORANT teams, partnership agreements could be signed during the ongoing competition.

The potential increase in revenue from gambling sponsors could benefit teams worldwide, especially considering the current banking industry crisis in the United States.
