Competitive Mode Set to Arrive in VALORANT EU and NA Following Patch 0.49

Competitive Mode Coming Soon to VALORANT

Ranked play is on the horizon for VALORANT players. Riot Games announced today that VALORANT’s Competitive mode will be available in Europe and North America shortly after patch 0.49 is released. Although the specific release date for this patch has not been revealed yet, players can look forward to testing their skills in a more competitive environment.

VALORANT’s Competitive mode will mirror the rules and format of the Unrated mode but with a focus on higher-stakes competition. The competitive system is still in its early stages and will evolve over time based on player feedback. While the Unrated mode will always be available, Competitive matchmaking may be temporarily disabled during the closed beta to refine the mode further.

How the Competitive Mode Works

VALORANT’s Competitive mode will introduce an eight-division system, similar to League of Legends. The ranks are divided into three tiers – Iron (the lowest rank), Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, Immortal, and the highest rank, VALORANT.

In this system, winning games is the primary factor in climbing the ladder. Exceptional performance will lead to faster rank increases, while underperforming may result in rank reduction. To determine their rank in VALORANT, players must complete 20 placement games.

The Incentive to Stay Competitive

Initially, the ranked system will heavily consider personal performance alongside wins. However, this performance-based system will gradually diminish over time. Its purpose is to motivate players to stay committed and avoid throwing games.

At the highest rank, VALORANT, the only factor that matters is winning and the manner in which games are won or lost.

VALORANT is a free-to-play character-based tactical shooter currently in closed beta. Players from the U.S., Canada, Europe, Russia, and Turkey can access the closed beta by creating a Riot account, linking it to a Twitch account, and watching VALORANT streams on Twitch.

The game is set to be officially released in summer 2020.
