Coach Kaplan: The Importance of Players’ Voice in Sentinels’ VALORANT Communication

Sentinels Face Uphill Battle in VCT Americas Playoffs

Sentinels face a tough challenge in securing a spot in the VCT Americas playoffs. In addition to winning their final two VALORANT matches of the season, the standings need to align in their favor for them to advance on tiebreakers.

Leadership Change Adds to Sentinels’ Challenges

On top of their playoff hopes, Sentinels also had to deal with a major roster shift. In-game leader Rory “dephh” Jackson stepped down from the team last week, leaving a void in leadership. Coach Adam Kaplan designated Jimmy “Marved” Nguyen as the new in-game leader, but emphasized the importance of all players contributing ideas and plays to support him. This approach of having multiple players involved in the shot-calling process was seen as both an opportunity and a necessity for the team.

Building Chemistry and Cohesion Amidst Changes

The 2023 season has been a challenging one for Sentinels, with roster and coaching changes, role shifts, and high expectations from fans. Kaplan admitted that it has been difficult to build chemistry and cohesion throughout the year, especially with the constant changes. The team has also struggled to establish a stable map pool.

Focusing on the Present and Future

Despite the challenges, Kaplan is focused on the upcoming must-win match against FURIA on May 18. He praised Marved’s performance as the new in-game leader, highlighting his confidence and energy in calling the shots. Looking ahead, Kaplan wants to see a steady map pool and a roster that prioritizes cooperation and cohesion for the 2024 season.

Regardless of the playoff outcome, Sentinels will need to maintain their confidence and energy as they face FURIA on May 18 and potentially compete in the Last Chance Qualifier.
