Benkai from Paper Rex has modest expectations for his team at VCT Masters Berlin

Paper Rex VALORANT player Benkai has low expectations for VCT Masters Berlin

In an interview with the Geographically Challenged podcast, Benedict “Benkai” Tan, one of Paper Rex’s top VALORANT players, expressed that he isn’t expecting too much from his team at VCT Masters Berlin.

Paper Rex secures spot in Berlin

Paper Rex is one of the two Southeast Asian (SEA) teams that earned a spot in Berlin through the SEA VCT: Stage Three Challengers Playoffs. They performed exceptionally well, defeating CBT Gaming, BOOM Esports, and Bren Esports in the upper bracket before losing to Bren Esports in the grand finals. According to VLR.gg’s statistics, Benkai was the second-best player in the SEA tournament with an average of 228.6 ACS, 1.31 K/D, and 144.7 ADR.

Benkai’s concerns about playing against teams from other regions

Although Benkai watches a lot of VALORANT, he feels that his team is not yet ready to compete against teams from other regions. He stated, “I expect us to do fairly OK but I’m also half expecting us to get fisted over there,” showing his concerns about the competition at VCT Masters Berlin.

This is a common problem for minor regions in esports. Teams like Paper Rex don’t regularly practice against North American or European squads, which are considered the strongest regions. Despite this, Paper Rex won’t be boot camping in Europe before the tournament and has no plans to stay in the country after the competition concludes. However, they will have the opportunity to scrimmage against top teams such as Sentinels, G2, and 100 Thieves when they arrive in Germany.

Potential obstacles for Paper Rex at VCT Masters Berlin

It remains uncertain whether Paper Rex will have its full team in Berlin. Khalish “d4v41” Rusyaidee, one of the team’s players, revealed that his travel pass has not been approved yet. He explained that every Malaysian citizen needs the document to exit the country.

VCT Masters Berlin is scheduled to start on September 10.
