YouTube revamps livestreaming service, prioritizing esports and gaming

YouTube is planning to relaunch its livestreaming platform with a focus on live gaming and esports, according to sources in the streaming industry.

The Google-owned video platform has been closely watching the growth of esports and is looking to acquire content and talent within the industry. One source said that gaming and esports will be a big driver for the new-look YouTube Live, with opportunities for streamers and organizations to grow even further.

YouTube began experimenting with livestreaming in 2010 but has not lived up to expectations, aside from a few major events. After Google’s failed attempt to acquire Twitch, it is now preparing to compete with the streaming giant. However, it will be challenging as Twitch has a monopoly on live streaming for gaming and esports.

YouTube has already recruited a team of 50 engineers with expertise in the streaming industry, showing its commitment to the venture. The platform has already broadcasted the League of Legends Championship Series since 2013, but it hopes to gain more viewership and break into the industry even further.

An official announcement about the revamped streaming service is expected at the gaming expo E3 in June.
