YouTube creators receive expanded monetization options for Shorts in recent policy update

YouTube Updates Contract Terms for Creators in the YouTube Partner Program

YouTube has announced updated contract terms for all creators involved in the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). The YPP is an initiative that provides creators with greater access to YouTube’s resources and monetization. In order to increase revenue opportunities for YPP members, YouTube has introduced new contract terms that must be accepted by applicable members to remain in the program.

New Monetization Structure for YPP

YouTube’s new YPP monetization structure consists of three separate modules that enable creators to profit across all of YouTube’s platforms, including traditional videos, Shorts, and livestreaming. Partnered creators will need to accept each module individually to receive full earnings, although they can opt out of specific monetization options if desired.

The three modules include:

  • Watch Page monetization: Enables creators to earn from long-form content and Shorts through ads and YouTube premium.
  • Shorts monetization: Provides earnings for creators through Shorts content via ads and YouTube premium.
  • Commerce Product Addendum: Applies to fan funding features, such as channel memberships and Super Chats received during livestreams.

Improvements to YouTube Shorts Monetization

One of the most significant changes in this new monetization structure is the improvement to YouTube Shorts earnings. YouTube Shorts previously received criticism for its low earnings potential, even from prominent creators on the platform. In response, YouTube adopted a revenue share model for short-form video content creators and allowed split revenue for content containing copyrighted music. The latest updates to the monetization structure further reinforce these changes.

Deadline for YPP Members

YPP members have six months to review and accept the three new modules and the program’s base guidelines. If members fail to accept at least the base terms by July 10, 2023, their channels will be removed from the program, requiring creators to reapply. YouTube encourages YPP members to complete the modules as soon as possible to start earning their maximum potential sooner.
