What is the income potential for streamers on Twitch and YouTube?

How Much Money Do Streamers Make on YouTube?

In the past decade, streaming and video editing tools have become more accessible, opening up opportunities for a new generation of content creators. These creators aim to entertain and inform audiences while also making money. However, it can be challenging to attract the viewership necessary to generate a significant income.

When it comes to streaming platforms, YouTube and Twitch are the dominant players. Twitch boasts more than 8 million unique streamers every month, while YouTube sees 500 hours of content uploaded per minute. In terms of finances, YouTube has paid out over $30 billion to creators between 2018 and 2021, as reported by Fortune. Likewise, Twitch allegedly paid some creators up to $10 million over three years, according to payout leaks.

With such substantial numbers, the question arises: how much money can streamers actually make on these platforms?

YouTube streamers earn money through advertisements and views. According to Business Insider, YouTube pays content publishers slightly over half of the revenue generated from ads. Rates can range from $0.10 to $0.30 USD per ad view.

For example, a starting YouTube streamer with 500 ad views on a stream can expect to earn between $50 to $150. However, creators with larger audiences that attract 50,000 ad views can make anywhere from $5,000 to $15,000.

In 2019, Business Insider reported that renowned YouTubers like Markiplier and Jacksepticeye earned over $1,000 per minute from their videos. Similar earning potential applies to streamers.

Twitch offers more diverse income opportunities for streamers, but they must qualify for Twitch’s Affiliate or Partner program. These two tiers offer different opportunities and payouts, with the Partner program being more exclusive.

Twitch streamers primarily accumulate income through ad revenue, subscriptions, bits, donations, and sponsorships. Streamers receive 50% of the revenue earned from subscriptions purchased on their channel, ranging from $4.99 to $24.99 USD depending on the duration.

Streamers also earn $0.01 for each bit used on their channel. Bits are a currency that fans can use to interact and show support. Additionally, fans can directly donate to streamers if they have a third-party website.

Streamers with around 10 daily views can earn between $50 to $100 per month. Well-known creators like xQc, on the other hand, can make millions each year, including additional earnings from exclusivity contracts.
