Twitch and Verizon Partner to Support HBCU Esports League
As part of their collaborative effort, Twitch and Verizon are joining forces to back the HBCU (historically black colleges and universities) Esports League. This groundbreaking league aims to promote STEM careers for HBCU students and shine a spotlight on future leaders within the community.
Verizon will be promoting the league and sponsoring events, including the HBCU Esports League Verizon Celebrity Pro-Am on March 20. This special tournament will feature HBCU students, celebrity athletes, and professional gamers competing in a Fortnite tournament.
The HBCU Esports League’s Mission
The HBCU Esports League was established by Cxmmunity Gaming Co., a nonprofit organization from Atlanta dedicated to increasing minority participation in esports and gaming. Twitch serves as the league’s official streaming partner and collaborates with brands like Verizon to expand the league’s efforts in improving diversity and inclusion within the gaming and esports communities.
Verizon plays a vital role as the foundational sponsor and official 5G partner of the league, further promoting STEM careers for HBCU students.
Verizon’s Support and Scholarship Initiatives
Verizon has provided scholarship funds to several HBCUs, including Oakwood University, Tennessee State University, and Fayetteville State University. The company also offers additional support to Cxmmunity in fostering business management and STEM skills among students. This includes facilitating networking opportunities with key executives in the gaming, sports, and entertainment industries.
The Lineup for the HBCU Esports League Verizon Celebrity Pro-Am
The HBCU Esports League Verizon Celebrity Pro-Am boasts an impressive lineup, featuring renowned athletes such as Aerial Powers and Allisha Gray from the WNBA, Iman Shumpert and Juwan Morgan from the NBA, and Tarik Cohen, an NFL player, two-time Twitch Rivals Streamer Bowl Champion, and HBCU graduate.
Cxmmunity will live stream the event on its Twitch channel starting at 3pm CT on March 20, with the aim of raising $50,000 for HBCU esports labs and scholarship opportunities. For more information about the HBCU Esports League, visit Cxmmunity’s official website.
