Twitch contributes $1 million to AbleGamers at GlitchCon

Twitch Donates $1 Million to AbleGamers

Twitch has partnered with popular streamer Benjamin “DrLupo” Lupo to make a generous donation of $1 million to AbleGamers, an organization that works towards improving accessibility in the gaming community for people with disabilities.

GlitchCon Event Replaces TwitchCon

This donation was made during the GlitchCon event, which was held online as a substitute for TwitchCon. The cancellation of TwitchCon earlier this year was due to concerns related to COVID-19.

A Surprise Announcement

Twitch co-founder and CEO, Emmett Shear, along with DrLupo, surprised AbleGamers COO, Steven Spohn, with the donation. The donation will enable AbleGamers to continue their efforts in enhancing accessibility and inclusion for gamers everywhere.

Supporting Spohn’s Goal

Spohn had set a goal to raise $1 million for AbleGamers on his 40th birthday. DrLupo’s previous work with charities, including St. Jude’s, inspired Spohn to aim for such a significant goal. During the surprise announcement, Spohn revealed that he had already raised nearly $200,000 toward his target.

“Gaming and Inclusion”

To emphasize the importance of AbleGamers’ mission, DrLupo reminded everyone that the goal is to bring people together through gaming despite the distractions and controversies present on social media.

Video Game Accessibility Awards

In addition to the generous donation, AbleGamers and Spohn announced the upcoming Video Game Accessibility Awards, which will recognize and celebrate games that have contributed to making the gaming industry more accessible to everyone. The awards ceremony will be broadcasted on the AbleGamers Twitch channel on November 15 at 10pm CT.
