Twitch Cracks Down on View-Boosting Tactics with Streamers’ Help
Twitch is taking action against streamers who use dishonest methods to increase their view counts, and they are enlisting the help of fellow streamers to combat this issue. Popular streamer Gothalion recently revealed that he received an email from Twitch CEO Dan Clancy, requesting him to identify channels that embed their streams on wikis.
What’s the Controversy?
Currently, there is an ongoing controversy on Twitch regarding certain streamers who embed their streams on game wikis to artificially inflate their view numbers. This means that when users visit a game’s wiki page, they inadvertently contribute to the view count of a Twitch channel without actually watching the stream. This practice is seen as unethical by many Twitch streamers.
Main Culprits and the Telltale Sign
FextraLife is one of the major offenders engaged in this practice. Streamers like Gothalion, Moistcr1tikal, Ludwig, and Asmongold have called them out for this view-boosting tactic. The key indicator of channels embedding streams on game wikis is the imbalance between the viewer count and the number of chatters in the Twitch chat. For example, Ludwig noticed that despite FextraLife having 60,000 viewers during a stream, the number of chatters remained significantly lower.
Twitch’s Initiative and Future Resolution
If Gothalion’s claims are true, Twitch is gearing up to take action against these offenders while also working on a more sustainable solution for the problem. Gothalion himself has been active on Twitter, exposing such channels. This lends credibility to the authenticity of the email sent by Twitch. Hopefully, this crackdown will soon put an end to channels that use fake views to gain an unfair advantage.
