Summer Games Done Quick 2021 Collects over $2.8 Million for Doctors Without Borders

Summer Games Done Quick 2021 Raises Record-Breaking Amount for Charity

Summer Games Done Quick 2021 (SGDQ 2021) has not only surpassed last year’s fundraising record of $2.3 million, but it has also exceeded the $2.77 million raised by Awesome Games Done Quick for the Prevent Cancer Foundation earlier this year in January.

In seven days, from July 4 to 11, SGDQ 2021 managed to raise an astonishing $2,897,704 to support Doctors Without Borders, making it the largest online event of Games Done Quick (GDQ) to date.

Highlights of SGDQ 2021

SGDQ 2021 saw several standout moments and achievements, with the event hitting the $1 million mark for the seventh consecutive year during the “Pokémon Black” and “White” race between PulseEffects and Swiftalu. It also marked the 15th GDQ overall to reach this fundraising milestone.

Furthermore, the event saw some fantastic speedruns, including “The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild,” “Super Metroid,” and a blindfolded “Super Mario 64” run that contributed to reaching the $2 million mark. The final big push came from the game “Dark Souls III,” which helped SGDQ 2021 exceed $2.5 million in donations.

The Final Moments and Future Plans

Just before the final SGDQ 2021 run of “Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix,” the GDQ team added an extra $250,000 to the total amount raised, thanks to sponsorships, Twitch subscriptions, and non-direct donations. The event concluded with a Critical Mode Level One any percent run of “KH2 Final Mix” that lasted over three hours and pushed the total over $2.8 million.

Looking ahead, the GDQ director and host, Kasumi “sumichu” Yogi, announced during SGDQ 2021 that AGDQ 2022 is tentatively planned as a physical event from January 9 to 16. More details about AGDQ 2022 will be revealed soon.
