Streamlabs media controversy receives update from OBS

Streamlabs and OBS Teams Collaborate to Resolve Controversy

Last month, Streamlabs, a leading livestreaming software provider, faced accusations of copying images, formatting, reviews, and key features from another platform when it launched Streamlabs Studio, a web-based broadcasting studio.

Concerns about the striking similarities between the two programs and their marketing sparked criticism from former employees and other companies in the streaming industry. The Open Broadcaster Software (OBS) team, responsible for maintaining the open-source platform, also alleged unethical practices by Streamlabs.

After a month of silence from Streamlabs on social media, OBS addressed the controversy with an update. Hugh “Jim” Bailey, one of OBS’s prominent developers, revealed ongoing discussions between the Streamlabs and OBS teams in recent weeks. The talks aimed to rebuild trust and establish a transparent partnership.

In a statement, OBS stated that both teams agreed on a plan to move forward. The dialogue focused on the shared mission of supporting streamers, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in benefiting the streaming community.

Streamlabs had previously announced its intention to remove the OBS portion from its platform’s branding, which has mostly been completed. The program is now called Streamlabs Desktop.

In its first post on Twitter since November 17, Streamlabs expressed gratitude towards the OBS team for the open discussions and hard work, highlighting that their goal has always been to serve creators.

However, there remains skepticism among many regarding Streamlabs’ commitment to serving creators. Further updates from the OBS or Streamlabs team are required to understand how they plan to address and remedy the situation, as well as how Streamlabs will recover as a platform.
