Record-breaking viewership for Nintendo’s first Direct of 2021

Nintendo Direct Breaks Viewership Records with Over 3 Million Live Viewers

This year’s first Nintendo Direct may have left some fans wanting more in terms of game announcements, but it certainly drew in a massive audience. The event reached an impressive milestone by attracting over 3 million live viewers across multiple streaming platforms.

Esports insider Rod “Slasher” Breslau reported that YouTube alone accounted for 2 million viewers, while Twitch followed closely behind with over 1 million viewers tuning in through various co-streams.

Some of the standout moments from the event included the addition of characters Pyra and Mythra from Xenoblade Chronicles 2 to the Super Smash Bros. roster, a remake of the beloved Nintendo Wii game The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword for the Switch, and the upcoming installment in the Mario franchise, called Mario Golf: Super Rush, set to launch on the Switch this June.

While fans were excited about the Skyward Sword remake, many were hoping for news about the highly-anticipated sequel, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild 2. Unfortunately, Nintendo shared that details about the sequel wouldn’t be revealed until later this year.

Among the most eagerly-awaited announcements for the event was news about a new Pokemon game. However, no information was provided, leaving fans eagerly anticipating updates at the Pokemon 25th Anniversary event later this year.
