PS5 cloud streaming release on the horizon—Portal remains the main concern for fans

The new cloud streaming feature for PlayStation 5 will launch this month

Sony has announced that the new cloud streaming feature for PlayStation 5 will be launching this month for PlayStation Plus Premium members.

Play supported digital games and game trials

The feature will allow PlayStation 5 users to stream supported digital games from the PlayStation catalog and game trials. Plus Premium members will have the first opportunity to access this feature. Additionally, subscribers will also be able to stream any supported PS5 games from the catalog that they already own.

Hundreds of PS5 titles to be added

In a PlayStation blog post by Hideaki Nishino, the senior vice president of platform experience, it was stated that certain big games will be available to stream at launch. Sony plans to add “hundreds of PS5 titles to support this new benefit.” Some of the games that subscribers can stream right away include Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Horizon Forbidden West, Ghost of Tsushima, Mortal Kombat 11, and Saints Row IV. Plus members will also have the opportunity to try out game trials for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and The Calisto Protocol.

Missing cloud streaming support for PlayStation Portal

Many fans were curious if the cloud streaming feature will work on PlayStation Portal. However, it seems that the Portal doesn’t actually support cloud streaming. The PlayStation blog post announcing the Portal explicitly states that it doesn’t support games that are streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium’s cloud streaming.

The Portal, which was announced back in May, is a handheld device that looks like a split-in-half PS5 controller with a screen in the middle. It has certain limitations, including the requirement of having the actual PS5 console turned on and both devices being connected to the same Wi-Fi network. This limits the appeal of the Portal, as players can’t use it while away from home. However, the prospect of cloud streaming on the handheld device seemed to alleviate that limitation for many people.

But with the lack of cloud streaming support on the Portal, it appears that PlayStation may have unintentionally diminished the device’s main attraction factor. Cloud streaming currently seems to be the highlight of the feature, which the Portal doesn’t offer.
