How to Manage Words in Twitch Chat for a Safe and Controlled Environment

Twitch has its own set of rules when it comes to words and language allowed in the platform. However, streamers also have the power to block or ban specific words to create a safer and more accessible chatroom environment for their viewers.

By banning certain words, streamers not only maintain control over their chat, but they also avoid potential violations of Twitch’s Terms of Service. In the past, streamers with large audiences have gotten banned for the presence of slurs, threats, or other offensive language in their chatrooms.

How to Ban and Block Words in Twitch Chat: AutoMod

Twitch provides streamers with a helpful tool called AutoMod, which is an automatic bot that can blacklist and ban words in Twitch chat. When a blacklisted word is detected, AutoMod notifies the streamer, who can then decide whether to allow or deny the message. However, AutoMod alone cannot ban, mute, or block users from the channel.

To set up AutoMod, follow these steps:

  1. Click on your profile picture and go to the Creator Dashboard.
  2. In the settings tab with a gear icon, select moderation options.
  3. In the AutoMod controls section, you will find three options: AutoMod Ruleset, Blocked terms or phrases, and Permitted terms or phrases.
  4. Adjust the ruleset to determine how strictly AutoMod filters chat messages for review. It is recommended to set at least a level one for AutoMod.
  5. To prohibit specific words or phrases, click on Blocked terms or phrases.
  6. Enter the desired words or phrases in the textbox. Here, you can also manage existing AutoModded words and make changes in the future.

Alternatives to AutoMod

AutoMod is a great starting point, but there are other options streamers can consider:

1. Live moderators from trusted community members: Having dedicated moderators who can ban, suspend, or restrict chat provides a valuable resource for streamers.

2. NightBot: This third-party alternative to AutoMod offers chat restrictions, commands, spam filters, accessible chat logs, and more.

The chat and community in a streamer’s channel are often seen as an extension of their content and behavior. Regardless of the method chosen, maintaining a well-managed chat is crucial for successful broadcasting.
