Why Dream Keeps Going Back and Forth with His Mask: The Revealing Interview
Dream, the popular Minecraft, YouTube, and streaming sensation, has had a rollercoaster relationship with being a faceless creator. In a recent interview with YouTube duo Colin and Samir, Dream finally opened up about why he has changed his mask-wearing status and how he’s focusing on his music career.
Dream gained fame as a faceless creator during the pandemic, amassing over 30 million YouTube subscribers. However, on October 2, 2022, he revealed his face to the world. But on June 9, 2023, Dream surprised fans by deleting his face reveal video and announcing his return to wearing the mask.
In the interview with Colin and Samir, Dream clarified the situation. He doesn’t regret revealing his face, but he also doesn’t regret going back to wearing the mask.

According to Dream, the mask holds great meaning for him. It inspires kids and viewers by sending the message that anyone can be successful, just like Dream. He believes that everyone is capable of achieving their goals.
Although Dream never planned to be faceless originally, he grew to see the mask as an integral part of his identity. He found inspiration in Stan Lee’s explanation of why Spider-Man’s costume covered his entire body, allowing anyone to relate to the character.
Dream’s original fan-made mask was challenging to see out of, so he had a new one commissioned by the same creators who made masks for superheroes like Spider-Man and Batman, as well as DJ stars Daft Punk and Marshmello.
The construction of the new mask took longer than expected, which led to the face reveal and subsequent unmasking. When the mask was finally ready, Dream decided to delete the face reveal video to create buzz and bring the mask branding back.
Even though the face reveal video is gone, Dream doesn’t regret it. He felt it was necessary to live his life the way he wanted. However, he might have approached it differently if the new mask had been ready sooner.
Dream also made it clear that his recent “bye, from Dream” video is entirely satire and is not related to any hate he received after revealing his face.
In addition to the mask saga, Dream shared that he signed with Republic Records after his face reveal in October 2022. Republic Records is home to numerous well-known music artists like Taylor Swift, Drake, The Weeknd, and Ariana Grande.
With the mask back on, Dream released his first single, “Until I End Up Dead,” dedicated to his late friend and rival in the Minecraft world, Technoblade, who passed away from cancer. Dream’s decision to bring back the mask aligns with his renewed commitment to music as he prepares for his first tour and future music releases.
It has been two years since Dream’s last song collaboration, and he has been fully immersed in learning about music and the industry. While the mask doesn’t directly connect to his music career revival, it is prominently featured in his music video and official artist photos from Republic Records.
Dream doesn’t plan on wearing the mask constantly, but it will remain an important part of his brand. Fans can expect to see him both with and without the mask as he moves forward.
