Chat on Twitch prevails in conquering Breath of the Wild

PointCrow and Twitch Chat Collaborate to Complete “Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” Challenge

Popular content creator PointCrow recently live-streamed his playthrough of “Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild” on Twitch, but with an interesting twist. The controls for the game were shared between PointCrow and the Twitch chat, alternating every five minutes.

The unique challenge took PointCrow and Twitch chat over 25 hours to complete, with approximately 17 hours of gameplay controlled directly by viewers. The stream reached its peak with around 600 viewers actively participating in this experiment.

PointCrow is renowned for attempting unique challenges in “Breath of the Wild,” such as completing the game without walking. Recently, he challenged his chat to join him in this one-of-a-kind partnership.

The concept of Twitch Plays originated in 2014 when an anonymous programmer devised a system that allowed Twitch chat to (semi) democratically control “Pokemon Red” by typing commands. Miraculously, after just over two weeks of gameplay, the Twitch chat successfully completed the game. This spawned various similar projects, with this “Breath of the Wild” run being the latest iteration of the interactive concept.

The control system for the Twitch Plays “Breath of the Wild” event resembled previous Twitch Plays events. Players had the ability to perform basic commands like movement, attacking, and jumping. Additionally, several macros were set up to execute moves like parrying, ensuring that the chat had all the necessary tools to succeed.

Contrary to expectations, PointCrow wasn’t always helpful. He would often play pranks on the chat, leading them to encounter high-level enemies and causing them to hastily retreat when outmatched. Surprisingly, most of the deaths during the run were not caused by enemies but by fall damage.

However, whenever the chat became stuck on a particular part of the game for an extended period, PointCrow would step in to help them progress. Boss fights, in particular, posed a challenge with hundreds of people attempting to input commands simultaneously. Given the game’s intricate mechanics and challenging boss battles, it seemed unlikely that it could be completed in such a chaotic manner. Nevertheless, with considerable assistance from PointCrow, the Twitch chat managed to clumsily defeat Ganon in the final fight.
