Asmongold discusses the negative impact of “corruption” in World of Warcraft

Twitch’s Top WoW Streamer Asmongold’s Critique of the Corruption System

Twitch streamer Asmongold, known for his World of Warcraft (WoW) content, recently voiced his opinion on the current state of the game. During one of his streams, he led a raid comprised solely of tanks through the previous tier’s raid, Eternal Palace. To his surprise, the group was able to defeat bosses with relative ease despite not having any healers or DPS classes. Asmongold noticed that players with high damage output were benefiting from powerful “corruption” pieces, which granted significant damage boosts without requiring much skill from the player.

The Issue with the Corruption System

The “corruption” system, introduced in Patch 8.3, randomizes gear enhancements that can boost a player’s DPS by up to 10% or more. This means that acquiring gear with corruption becomes crucial for players, but proc rates for the strongest corrupted pieces are random. Asmongold expressed his concern about the impact of randomness on player skill and performance in WoW raids. According to him, the difference between the best and worst player in a raid comes down to luck rather than individual skill or gameplay mechanics. He believes that this undermines the true essence of skill-based gameplay in WoW.

Blizzard’s Justification for the Corruption System

As this is the final phase of the Battle for Azeroth expansion before the upcoming level and stat squish in Shadowlands, Blizzard may have implemented the corruption system to allow players to experience immense power before the game resets. However, Asmongold remains skeptical about whether the corruption system truly enhances the overall player experience.

The Impact of Randomness on Skill Assessment

Asmongold highlighted the issue of relying on overpowered corrupted gear to determine a player’s success in raids. The lack of control over these randomized enhancements makes it difficult to distinguish between players who are genuinely skillful and those who are simply benefiting from lucky gear drops. This undermines the importance of individual skill and creates an environment where luck plays a significant role in determining success.
