Release Date and Preorder Prices for Pokémon TCG Obsidian Flames

The third expansion of the Scarlet and Violet series, named Obsidian Flames in English and Ruler of the Black Flame in Japanese, is here. This exciting release brings more than 200 cards and Rare variants to the table.

What’s New in Obsidian Flames?

In the Obsidian Flames expansion, we meet type-shifted Tera Pokémon ex. These cards play with the usual Energy type but show new Weakness and Resistance from their Tera type. Fans will find six of these unique Tera Pokémon ex cards, plus 15 Pokémon ex cards in the set.

Obsidian Flames pools together cards from the Japanese version of Ruler of the Black Flame. It adds ex Starter decks, ex Special Sets, and about 30 cards from the previous Paldea Evolved expansion that were left out earlier. Collectors will be thrilled to find 12 Illustration Rares, six Special Illustration Rare Pokémon and Supporter cards, 12 Ultra Rare Pokémon ex and Supporter cards, and three Hyper Rare gold-etched cards in this set.

When Can You Get Obsidian Flames?

The launch for Obsidian Flames is set from July 30 to Aug. 4 at select local game stores. These pre-release events are a sneak peek. The full English launch follows on Aug. 11. If you’re after the Japanese version, Ruler of the Black Flame, you can start collecting from July 28.

Obsidian Flames is packed with cool stuff. There’s an Elite Trainer Box Exclusive, a Build and Battle Stadium, and a Booster Bundle, to name a few. Prices on sites like TCGPlayer and Amazon give us an average cost for these items: the Exclusive Elite Trainer Box is around $180, the Elite Trainer Box around $40, the Build & Battle Box about $22, the Build & Battle Stadium approximately $48, the Booster Box close to $115, the Booster Bundle around $22, single booster packs nearly $4, and blister three-packs about $19.
