Pokémon Go Routes to Allow Player-Created Content with Exploration Rewards

Niantic has exciting news for Pokémon Go players! They are introducing Routes. This feature lets players craft their adventures and follow others’ paths worldwide for rewards. ESN.GG got this scoop on June 10.

Long Awaited Feature

Fans have wanted personalized content like Routes since the game’s launch. Now, all the talk and data mining confirm it’s real.

Why Routes Matter

Niantic aims to keep Pokémon Go fresh and engaging. Despite some backlash, they focus on new AR developments and exploring the real world. Routes will help players discover new places and return for more.

Routes allow players to map their walks and share them. They use “geodata objects” for exploring and sharing their journey. This brings in-game rewards.

Exploring with a Guide

Chad Jones, a senior producer, told ESN.GG that exploring with Routes is like having a guide. They show hidden gems in new areas. Players can share and access knowledge through Routes, experiencing places they might miss alone.

Routes will enhance exploration and community connection. Developers see it as a way to travel together with insider tips.

Every Route starts and ends at a geodata object, like a PokéStop. Sometimes, the same PokéStop can start and end a Route. This supports players in rural areas.

How It Works

When you record a Route, “GPS breadcrumbs” mark your path. Then you can add descriptions and tags before sending it for review. If approved, bonuses apply to the path, making it available in the Nearby menu.

Moderators review each Route. They ensure the paths are safe and meet Niantic’s standards. The approval process takes about 24 hours.

While on a Route, players can play Pokémon Go as usual.

Creators choose if their Route can be followed from both ends or just the starting point. They can tag the Route for accessibility and more. They can also choose to be anonymous or display their trainer name.

Niantic hinted at rewards like Pokémon encounters and XP boosts for walking a Route. This makes Routes especially beneficial in rural areas.

No release date has been given for Routes or the PokéStop Showcases teased at Summer Game Fest. More details will come closer to the launch.
