IRL Pokémon Professor Names New Cockroach Species After ‘Beautiful’ Ultra Beast

Pokémon is not just a global craze but also a source of inspiration across many areas, from clothes and toys to TV shows, movies, and now, even science.

Scientists in Singapore have discovered a new cockroach species. They found it nearly five years ago, reports say. Its long antennas, wing-like hoods, and slender legs earned it the name “Nocticola pheromosa.” This name mirrors the Ultra Beast Pokémon known as Pheromosa.

Pheromosa comes from another world in the Pokémon Sun and Moon games. It arrived in the Alola region through Ultra Wormholes. Known as UB-02 Beauty, this Bug/Fighting-type Pokémon has a delicate-looking appearance, with a hood that looks like hair.

Foo Maosheng, an entomologist, played a role in this discovery. He and his colleague are big Pokémon fans. They see studying insects as a real-life Pokédex challenge. Their study got published on Pokémon Day, February 27, showing the fun connection between their work and their hobby.

Other animals in the real world also have Pokémon-inspired names. This includes various beetles and even a pterodactyl. Pokémon might be a fantasy, but its impact on science brings it closer to our reality.
