How Many Pokémon Currently Exist?

Pokémon has grown a lot since the first 151 creatures in Pokémon Red and Blue. With new games like Pokémon Legends Arceus and Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, we now have more Pokémon and regional variations than ever before. This growing world brings the total count of Pokémon way up.

Keeping Track

It’s hard to keep up with all the Pokémon out there. The number is huge, much like real-world animals. Only super fans might manage to track them all.

So Many Pokémon!

As of January 9, 2023, we hit 1,008 Pokémon across nine generations. Main Pokémon games usually introduce these new faces – not spin-offs like Pokémon Go. On average, about 100 new Pokémon pop up with each generation.

Here’s a breakdown by generation:
– Generation I: 151 Pokémon
– Generation II: 100 Pokémon
– Generation III: 135 Pokémon
– Generation IV: 107 Pokémon
– Generation V: 156 Pokémon
– Generation VI: 72 Pokémon
– Generation VII: 88 Pokémon
– Generation VIII: 96 Pokémon
– Generation IX: 93 Pokémon

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet added fewer new Pokémon compared to other games. Still, they brought big changes like an open world and new features.

Legendary Pokémon Count

We now have 66 legendary Pokémon. These include icons and lesser-known legends across the series. Note, variations like Galarian Articuno don’t add to this count since they are considered alternate forms.

Pokémon Types

The Pokémon series features 18 distinct types. This has stayed pretty consistent. The first 15 types came out with Red and Blue. They included:

– Normal
– Fighting
– Flying
– Poison
– Ground
– Rock
– Bug
– Ghost
– Fire
– Water
– Grass
– Electric
– Psychic
– Ice
– Dragon

With Pokémon Gold and Silver, Dark and Steel types were added for balance. Recently, the Fairy type was introduced in Pokémon X and Y, acting as a counter to Dragons and adding strategic depth to battles.

In summary, the Pokémon world keeps expanding. Keeping up might be tough, but it’s exciting to see what’s next.
