The New Champ: Justin Tang Triumphs
On Feb. 26, Justin Tang grabbed the spotlight at the Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Knoxville Regionals. He celebrated his big win with loud cheers. It was his first try at a Regional, and he kept it so secret not even his parents knew.
Justin has played competitive Pokémon for just 18 months. That’s short next to players who have been in the game for over five years. But he didn’t just get lucky. He beat top players like Wolfe Glick and Ashton Cox to win.
His final match was against Aaron Clemons, another newcomer. Their battle was one of the year’s best, proving it’s never too late to shake things up in competitive Pokémon.
Tang Gang Cheers on Twitch
Being a new player at his first Regionals, Justin was the underdog. Yet, he fought his way to victory, gaining many fans. They showed their support by chanting “Tang Gang” in Twitch chat during the finals.
VGC caster Rosemary Kelley also supported him with the #tanggang hashtag on Twitter.
The Winning Team Strategy
Though new to VGC, Justin’s team strategy looked familiar. His Perish Trap team had five Pokémon used by Wolfe Glick at a previous tournament. His team led Palafin to its third consecutive win. Justin’s team also included Gothitelle and Arcanine, showing great strategy.
Aaron chose a strong Trick Room team. Despite the odds, he reached the finals. However, Justin’s Gothitelle became the star, countering Aaron’s main threats, Torkoal and Armarouge.
Crucial Moments in the Matches
Aaron started strong in game one, but Justin turned things around with a well-timed Perish Song and Psychic attack. This shift in tactics allowed Justin’s team to take the lead and secure the first game.
In game two, Justin’s early Perish Song seemed to set him up for a quick victory. However, Aaron’s Murkrow fought hard, making the game tough for Justin’s last Pokémon, Gothitelle.
Game three saw Justin cleverly reverse Aaron’s Trick Room. This gave his team the speed advantage, leading to a decisive win with Arcanine and Gothitelle shining.
Feeling thrilled, Justin shared his joy and plans to join more tournaments, including the US Internationals this year.
