Yuumi’s Leak Mirrors Akali’s from Last Year

Yuumi, the Latest Champion in League of Legends, Revealed Despite Leak

The newest champion in League of Legends, Yuumi, also known as the Magical Cat, was recently unveiled. This may not come as a surprise to many players, as her image, ability icons, and some in-game footage were leaked a few days prior.

This leak occurred in a similar way to the accidental revelation of Akali’s VGU form last year. In both instances, the issue originated from an unlisted YouTube video.

The Unintentional Leak

A YouTube video by Nasteey, a member of the League Partner Program, shed light on the leak. Nasteey had the opportunity to play-test the new champion at Riot’s studios, and he recorded gameplay footage to create a guide. Under a nondisclosure agreement (NDA), he was responsible for editing the video himself. However, he also had to get approval from Riot. To do so, he uploaded the video as an unlisted video on YouTube. The problem arose when he discovered that unlisted videos could still be viewed if included in a playlist. By the time he realized this, the video had already garnered 20 views. Eventually, images from the video began circulating on the internet, and the leak could no longer be contained.

A Recurring Issue

This incident is reminiscent of a similar leak involving Professor Akali, another streamer from the League Partner Program, who inadvertently leaked the Akali VGU update last year. Compared to that leak, this one was relatively minor since only images from the video were leaked. In both cases, Riot attributed the leaks to honest mistakes.

Riot Needs to Improve

Riot should take measures to prevent such leaks in the future. There are various methods for privately sharing videos online, such as file transfer or utilizing platforms like Dropbox. There is no reason for someone to upload a video to YouTube for Riot’s approval. Other gaming studios, such as Blizzard, have successfully implemented programs for content creators to reveal new content without leaks. It shouldn’t be too difficult for Riot to do the same.

It is hoped that Riot will not abandon this approach entirely and instead establish a process to avoid similar headaches. It is commendable that the company supports its content creators, and we want to see this support continue. While the creators may have made mistakes with these leaks, Riot also bears some responsibility.
