Why Tryndamere in LoL received buffs and nerfs within 2 weeks: An analysis

Tryndamere Receives Nerfs in Upcoming Patch 13.18

Tryndamere has been making waves in the current League of Legends meta after receiving a significant buff in Patch 13.17. Despite boasting an impressive win rate (51.5 percent across all ranks, according to U.GG) and becoming a popular choice among top laners, Riot Games has decided to nerf the champion just two weeks after his buff.

The upcoming Patch 13.18 will bring nerfs to Tryndamere’s health growth and base AD, aiming to reduce his early-game power. Surprisingly, the developers have chosen not to touch the buff that made him so powerful in the first place.

Last patch, Tryndamere’s attack range was increased by 50, reaching 175 compared to the usual 125 for most melee champions. While this may not seem like a significant change, it has a massive impact on melee champions, especially top laners.

Riot designer Phroxzon discussed the decision not to revert the attack range buff, explaining that the goal is to promote skill expression by allowing players to utilize this mechanic. The intention is to reward strong players who take advantage of the extra attack range.

The top lane meta has also contributed to Tryndamere’s rise in popularity. His passive and the number of auto attacks he can unleash make him a formidable champion in early skirmishes, which is what most top laners strive for. Additionally, Tryndamere can choose between two different builds, Stridebreaker and crit-focused, each with its own strengths, giving him versatility in-game.

While Phroxzon acknowledges that Tryndamere is currently overpowered, the nerfs may not be sufficient to bring him down immediately. However, they hope that these changes will make him less frustrating to play against.

Personally, I believe that the base AD nerf will have a more noticeable impact than the reduced health growth. However, if you have a favorable matchup and can leverage the attack range advantage, Tryndamere will still dominate in the following weeks.

The nerfs to Tryndamere are set to go live on Sept. 13 with the release of Patch 13.18.
