Why are League of Legends pros from Korea facing bans?

TheShy Receives Permban in League of Legends Korean Server

During a recent solo queue stream, Weibo Gaming top laner, TheShy, was permanently banned from the League of Legends Korean server. While the exact reason for his ban remains unconfirmed, Riot Games Korea announced earlier this month that rental accounts for foreign professionals have been suspended.

Possible Reasons for Bans on Korean Players

Despite being a Korean player, TheShy still fell victim to the account suspension. The speculation is that Korean players like him may have been using rental accounts without proper authorization. It is possible that these rental accounts will be reinstated during Korean bootcamps.

TheShy’s Experience Competing Outside Korea

TheShy has been playing in the LPL for many years and even won the World Championship with Invictus Gaming in 2018. His recent contract renewal with Weibo Gaming solidifies his presence in the LPL. Riot Games Korea may have treated him as a foreign professional, resulting in the account suspension. The same fate befell former world champion and Korean mid laner, Doinb.

Improving the Competitive Environment

Riot Games Korea implemented the account suspensions to address complaints from Korean solo queue players about intentional trolling and inting from Chinese players. However, by banning players like TheShy, it remains uncertain whether these restrictions will truly improve the Korean solo queue experience.
