Riot Teases Potential New Champion in League of Legends
Riot recently shared some teaser images on Universe, the official lore platform for League of Legends. These images seem to hint at the introduction of the game’s next champion.
In these images, we see a person using bright golden chains to restrain Demacia’s most well-known heroes. This led us to speculate that the new champion could be a super-villain from Demacia or possibly a criminal. And it seems our assumptions may have been correct. In a short story titled “Demacian Heart,” which was posted on Universe last week, Riot introduced a Demacian character named Sylas. There’s a strong possibility that Sylas could be the new champion, or at the very least, he is somehow connected to the upcoming release.
A Tragic Tale: Demacian Heart and Sylas
The story of “Demacian Heart” revolves around Sylas, who serves as the tragic protagonist. Demacia has always been portrayed as a prosperous nation with a sinister secret—it forbids the use of magic and actively hunts down and eliminates any mages. Galio, a golem made of an anti-magic material called petricite, was created to combat and eradicate mages.
Ironically, Sylas is a mage himself. However, his magical ability is not to cast spells, but rather to see magic in others as bright lights. At least, that’s what initially appears to be his power. Without revealing too many details from the story, we can say that Sylas starts to question his role and intervene to save a young mage girl. Unfortunately, his actions result in a catastrophic event where both the girl and her father, along with a mageseeker, are killed by Sylas unintentionally.
Sylas: A Troubled Fugitive Ready for Revenge
Now a fugitive himself, Sylas carries the weight of his unintentional actions and an immense grudge against Demacia. It’s safe to assume that he is mentally scarred from witnessing the aftermath of the havoc he unwittingly caused. The prevailing theory is that Sylas will be the new champion—a sympathetic villain seeking to dismantle Demacia. He may resort to drastic measures, such as murdering individuals, to achieve his goal. However, there is another possibility that this story merely serves to shed light on the corrupt nature of Demacia and that the new champion is an entirely different character altogether.
Implications for League of Legends Lore
Regardless of the outcome, Sylas undoubtedly plays a significant role in shaping the lore of League of Legends. Whether he becomes the new champion or not, his actions and the events of “Demacian Heart” will have far-reaching consequences. We eagerly await Riot’s official announcement and the resolution of this intriguing storyline.
