What is the new Emerald rank in LoL?

League of Legends Introduces Reworked Competitive Ranks

The competitive ranking system in League of Legends has been in place for over a decade, with ranks ranging from Bronze to Diamond and three Apex Tiers. However, Riot Games has announced a rework to the system starting from Split Two. This includes the removal of promotion series and a reduction in placement games, making ranked play faster and more streamlined.

In addition, the new season introduces a brand new rank after six years: Emerald. This change aims to address the imbalanced distribution of rankings between Bronze and Silver, with the majority of players falling within this range.

Understanding League’s New Emerald Rank

The newly introduced Emerald rank sits between Platinum and Diamond. Riot implemented this rank to fix the heavily skewed distribution of rankings. Their goal is to ensure that players between Iron and Silver are considered below-average, while still providing a way to accommodate the skill levels for Diamond-ranked players.

These changes are particularly impactful for players like myself, who have gradually climbed the ranks from Bronze to Platinum. The addition of the Emerald rank presents an exciting new challenge. It is expected that this rework will create a more balanced spread between Silver and Platinum, while reaffirming Bronze as the below-average rank it was always intended to be. However, the lowest rank, Iron, will remain unchanged.

Overall, Riot Games hopes that the reworked ranking system will enhance the competitive experience for players and create a fairer gameplay environment.
