Vasilii’s 2020 Competitive Play Ban to be Lifted Following Domestic Abuse Investigation

Chinese League of Legends Player Vasilii to Compete Again After Banning Incident

Chinese professional League of Legends player Li “Vasilii” Wei Jun will be unbanned in 2020 and able to compete professionally once more. Vasilii’s ban was the result of a domestic violence incident that occurred during one of his streams. Following an investigation by Riot, Vasilii was banned and his contract with the team, Newbee, was terminated.

In 2017, Vasilii’s girlfriend called the police during a domestic dispute, alleging that he caused property damage and made threats towards her.

Riot announced the ban, stating, “We consider the fact that threats of domestic abuse were made—and that they were made toward a defenseless person and in a private residence—to be aggravating factors. Whereas making these threats toward another professional player on stage might warrant a 10-month suspension, physical intimidation and threats of domestic abuse should be punished much more harshly.”

Riot classified the incident as “extreme misconduct” and imposed a ban of at least 12 months. This ban was extended due to the severe nature of the incident, and Riot removed the maximum ban term for extreme misconduct.

While Vasilii will be allowed to compete again, there is currently no information on whether he will return to the professional stage.
