The LPL adopts a regional model resembling Overwatch League

LPL Plans to Transition into Franchised League

When the LPL announced their plans to convert into a franchised league, it shook the esports world. This move was a major development in the world of competitive League of Legends.

Recently, the LPL made an announcement on Weibo, revealing their plans for a regional, city-based model, similar to the Overwatch League. With the majority of League of Legends viewership coming from China, this regional model is expected to garner strong fan support.

Like the NA LCS, teams will have to apply to join the new LPL league. Existing organizations will compete with new entrants based on specific criteria, including clear structure of the team, financial stability, team management, and operating history.

While many details remain unclear, existing teams will have the opportunity to apply for the new league. There is no mention of franchise fees or the fate of teams that are not approved, but some sort of compensation will be offered and old teams can reapply as the league expands.

Franchising is expected to begin between the spring and summer splits of season eight, but an official timeline has not been provided.
