The Incredible Journey of CLG: From Savage Memes to Winning the First LCS Trophy

Doublelift’s First Trophy

On August 23, 2015, Counter Logic Gaming (CLG) achieved what many thought was impossible: they won their first trophy since star AD Carry Doublelift joined the team. CLG defeated Team Solo Mid (TSM) in 3 games to win the NA LCS Finals 2015. Despite a history of choking in the playoffs, CLG overcame their nerves and rivals to secure the victory. This article will explore CLG’s journey, their current state, and what lies ahead for them.

Golden Age – a Flashback to 2010

CLG was established on April 16, 2010, by former player and current CEO HotshotGG. Considered the best team in North America at the time, they performed well in various tournaments, winning the 2010 WCG Grand Finals against SK Gaming, as well as MLG Raleigh and IEM Cologne in 2011. However, their success declined over time, and they couldn’t reach the same level of achievement.

Doublelift joins

In Season 2, CLG replaced Elementz with Doublelift, who transitioned from a Support player to an AD Carry. Although they came close to winning offline tournaments after his inclusion, they were unable to replicate their past success and fell to emerging teams like TSM. CLG finished 9th-10th at the Season 2 World Championships. Following that, CLG recruited current TSM coach Locodoco as their support, only to have him leave a few months later due to disappointing finishes.

In an attempt to perform well in Season 3, CLG acquired Aphromoo and Link for the Support and Mid positions, qualifying for the newly created League Champion Series (LCS). Despite impressive performances from Doublelift at Allstars, CLG failed to make it to worlds. Despite hiring analyst and caster MonteCristo as a coach and making roster changes, CLG finished 5th in the summer split and missed out on worlds once again.

Things started to look up for CLG in Season 4 as they made roster changes, but they stumbled in the playoffs against TSM. The Summer Split started well for CLG before they experienced a slump and narrowly avoided relegation.

A new beginning

Season 5 marked a new beginning for CLG with changes to their roster and coaching staff. They had mixed results but narrowly missed out on first place after the regular season. Going into the playoffs, there were doubts about their performance.

Despite doubts, CLG performed exceptionally well in the playoffs, defeating Impulse 3-0. Many considered their final match against TSM to be challenging, but CLG outdrafted TSM and showcased their versatility. CLG emerged victorious and became the 2015 Summer Split Champions, securing North America’s first seed for worlds.

What the future holds

The story of CLG is one of perseverance and inspiration. Will they continue their success on the world stage? Can they perform well in the group stage? These questions will remain on the minds of CLG fans. For now, fans can celebrate the team’s triumph and have faith in their future endeavors.
